About RIO

RIO, a familiar name in Spain and Europe since 1896, was introduced to US shooters in 2002. With the opening of its state-of-the-art production plant in Marshall, Texas, in 2015 RIO Ammunition is now focused on the production and development of cartridges for the American shooter. RIO Ammunition is the US subsidiary of MAXAM, the worldwide leader in the development, manufacturing, and marketing of sporting and hunting shotgun cartridges. RIO's success is based on proprietary technological developments and a totally integrated production chain ranging from the manufacture of the main raw materials to the production of all the cartridge components (cases, primers, powder, wads and shot).

RIO History

Since its foundation by Alfred Nobel in 1872, RIO’s parent company MAXAM has become a global organization composed of five business units, 6,500 employees on the five continents, industrial facilities in more than 45 countries and sales in over 100. Strongly positioned as a major international player in a modern-day global market, MAXAM Outdoors, its sporting ammunition division, has manufacturing plants in Spain, the UK and USA producing more than 500M shells annually.

The technological developments of MAXAM Outdoors in the components used in our cartridge manufacturing enable a complete and efficient combustion with a total absence of residues after shooting. Our powders are developed to be used in different temperature and humidity conditions. Our traditional PSB+ and modern CSB powder ranges are characterized by its regularity and precision. Along with these comes the new SSB+ powder. A product developed specifically for cartridges containing steel shot and other special cartridges.

The RIO brand was founded in 1896 and since then it has gone from strength to strength and is now sold in more than 60 countries serving millions of hunters and shooters around the world. RIO’s sponsored shooters have represented their countries in various Olympic Games and won countless world shooting championships. RIO shooter, Spaniard Alberto Fernández won the final competition of the 2017 season in New Delhi in India. He not only won a gold medal in the individual category but also achieved a world record in the final with 119/125 and 48/50. Alberto favorite shooting cartridge is RIO’s Star Team Evo cartridge.
